The work of a master seal maker is not just carving.
It starts from the imagination and a consideration of the client; their desires and dreams for their lives, hopes for their beloved one and family, their philosophy of life.
Then he selects characters, face (font), and styles.
Sometimes he creates his own face that would better suits clients’ needs.
Layout is another challenge for the small “canvas” of the seal’s surface.
Once the design is completed, he chooses the material for the seal which varies from wooden ones to gemstones.
Each type of wood and gemstone has its own power and meaning.
Then he writes it on the seal for carving. He makes very fine strokes with a small carving knife, thinking of the clients and praying for their happiness.
This is because he believes that hand-carved seals symbolize the clients themselves.
